Writing Consultations

All MacEwan students are welcome to register for a peer-to-peer writing consultation, whatever their discipline or level of study. During a consultation, students meet one-on-one with a trained writing consultant who facilitates a conversation about their writing.

Our consultants can help you understand your assignment guidelines and the genre you have been asked to write. They can answer questions and curiosities that arise while you’re writing. And they can review a draft of your document and provide feedback to help you improve your written communication. However, consultants are not subject area tutors and will not provide guidance on content. Nor they are not editors or proofreaders.

Please note, while we support writers at every stage of the writing process, students are expected to bring a written document, however preliminary (as well as any associated assignment documents), to the consultation.

The Writing Centre is located in the Library, room 6-202. Please check the Library’s Hours of Operation to plan your visit. The Writing Centre is closed on weekends and statutory holidays.

In-Person or Online Appointments

Schedule a 25-minute or a 45-minute in-person or online video appointment with one of our writing consultants for support at any stage of the writing process.

Please arrive in-person five minutes before your appointment time. If you choose an online appointment, log into your appointment 5 minutes before appointment start time by clicking “Start or Join Online Consultation.”

In-person appointments are in room 6-202 in the Library.

Written Feedback

Do you want feedback on your paper without having to show up for an appointment? Schedule a Written Feedback appointment, and upload your paper (doc or docx only) and assignment guidelines (doc, docx, or pdf) on your appointment form. Then, you will be emailed when the feedback is done, and there will be a separate email with the paper attached.

The appointment date and time may not coincide with when the written feedback will be completed and emailed to you, but we will try to return feedback within 1-2 business days. Consultants will typically spend an hour with your paper, reading and making comments on as much as they can before returning it to you. If you would like your consultant to review a specific part or feature of your paper, please include these requests in your appointment form. Additionally, consultants may limit their feedback when reviewing long papers (ex., over 10 pages) or during periods of high traffic at the Writing Centre.

Your paper only has to be begun, not finished: you can submit a few paragraphs or a draft in progress. We strongly encourage all students to make follow-up appointments as they work through their papers. Make sure you plan accordingly and submit early, as you will need time to revise after each consultation!

Walk-In Appointments

The Writing Centre is located in the Library, room 6-202. Please check the Library’s Hours of Operation to plan your visit. The Writing Centre is closed on weekends and statutory holidays.
