Personal Statement About this Work
I returned to Winnipeg to lead the UWinnipeg shortly before the MacLeans infamous headline "Welcome to Winnipeg: where Canada's racism problem is at its worst" and the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's report. My return to Winnipeg was personal, the beginnings of my own reconciliation journey and second transformative experience at UWinnipeg, first as an undergraduate and later as president. I selected "Our Shared Future" because it allowed me and others I worked closely with in Winnipeg, to reflect on how individuals and institutions are responding to reconciliation. In some ways, writing this chapter gave me closure as I moved back to Edmonton to lead MacEwan. I do not say this because the work is done. I say this because MacEwan has a different context than UWinnipeg. The chapters were written before COVID-19, before the protests in response to George Floyd’s murder and are more relevant than ever.
