Personal Statement About this Work
I have always been casually interested in stress. Why Zebra’s Don’t Get Ulcers is a science book about stress for the lay reader. I first read it in grad school as a break from reading about bird communication. Sapolsky’s engaging writing style had me hooked from the first page, starting a love affair with anything Sapolsky writes and with the field of stress research. This book opened my eyes to the far-reaching impacts of stress and encouraged me to develop better stress-management habits. It also inspired me to create a special topics course about stress and coping my second year of teaching, using this book as the textbook. Reading Why Zebra’s Don’t Get Ulcers altered the course of my academic career, as it grew my casual interest in stress into an academic interest. No other book has as significantly impacted my life. I recommend it to everyone!
