Please join us for an introduction to one of the dialects of nêhiyawêwin (Cree), the most widely spoken Indigenous language in Canada. Our teacher will be Les Skinner, who teaches nêhiyawêwin at Concordia and through EPL via the Native Friendship Centre.
Prepare yourself for laughter! For pushing through the unfamiliar! For the excitement of coming closer, with each try, to correct pronunciation of words that matter.

Description
SG̲aawaay Ḵ’uuna (Edge of the Knife) is a stunning cinematic achievement and a spellbinding tale of pride, tragedy, and remorse set in Haida Gwaii in the 1800s.
In this spectacular rendering of a classic Haida story, life on the land is shaped by the power of the elements, where natural and supernatural forces co-exist. Two extended families meet at their annual fishing camp one summer on the shores of Haida Gwaii, in the Pacific Northwest of Canada. Tragedy strikes when a storm hits the small encampment.
Co-directed by Haida filmmaker Gwaai Edenshaw and Tsilhqot’in filmmaker Helen Haig-Brown, this ambitious 2018 project was a collaboration with Isuma, the team behind the landmark film Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner. Made with a Haida cast and in collaboration with the Haida Council, Edge of the Knife proves that cinema can be at once a powerful vessel for riveting storytelling and a vital act of Indigenous language and culture revitalization. Description
The Interdisciplinary Dialogue is an annual campus-wide teaching and learning project that invites students, faculty, staff, and the public to explore social justice issues together across the winter term. The 2022 Interdisciplinary Dialogue topic is RECOVERY—with its complexity, challenges, and possibilities.
We are thrilled to announce that Mayor Amarjeet Sohi will be joining us as our special guest during our closing event. Mayor Sohi has led a fascinating life, replete with many challenges and opportunities for recovery, from political persecution in India, to building a new life as an immigrant in Edmonton. Building on his experience as a city councillor, and as the federal minister for Natural Resources and for Infrastructure and Communities, Mayor Sohi is now spearheading efforts to revitalize Edmonton communities, to address social and racial injustice, and to help our city recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.
This event is free.
Bring yourselves! Questions for Sohi! Your lived experiences and your learning across the year! Our community welcomes all to RECOVERY.
